Os ydych chi eisiau dysgu mwy am bob dim i wneud a’r Gymraeg, mae’n RHAID ymweld a’r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol – gwyl cenedlaethol blynyddol iaith a diwylliant Cymraeg.

Mae’r ‘steddfod yn ddigwyddiad anferth – ni ellir tanbrisio ei pwysigrwydd i’r iaith a’r diwylliant. Mae ‘na ystod anhygoel o eang o bethau’n mynd mlaen, o’r gwych (Y Lle Celf) i’r chwerthinllyd (y gystadleuaeth dawnsio disco…).

Treuliwch diwrnod neu ddau yn trochi ymhob dim, a byddwch yn dod allan ar yr ochr arall efo dealltwriaeth lot gwell o be sy’n neud i (rhai) o’r Cymry Cymraeg ticio.

  • Mae’n cymryd lle yn flynyddol, yn wythnos gynta mis Awst, mewn lleoliad gwahanol bob blwyddyn, fel arfer naill ai yn y Gogledd neu De Cymru.
  • Mae’n hen! Dechreuodd o 850 mlynedd nôl, er mae ‘na di bod ambell i saib ers hynny.
  • Mae’n mawr! Digwyddiad diwyllianol mwya Cymru a gwyl symudol mwya Ewrop. Daeth 186,000 ymwelwr yn 2024.
  • Mae’n newid (yn araf…)! Roedd y steddfod yn arfer bod yn ynysol ac yn gor-draddodiadol, ond mae wedi dechrau moderneiddio, a nawr yn croesawu’r rhai sydd ddim yn siarad Cymraeg.

If you want to gain a greater understanding of all things Cymraeg, you HAVE to visit the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol (National Eisteddfod)! – the annual national festival of Cymraeg language and culture.

The ‘steddfod’ is a huge cultural phenomenon – its continuing importance to Cymraeg language and culture can’t be underestimated. You’ll find a mind-boggling range of things going on, some of it brilliant (Y Lle Celf – The Art Space), some of it terrible (the disco dancing competition…).

Spend a day or two immersing yourself in all that’s going on, and you’ll come out the other side with a much better understanding of what makes some (but not all) of the Cymry Cymraeg tick.

  • It takes place annually, in the first week of August, in a different location each year, usually alternating between North and South Cymru.
  • It’s old! It started 850 years ago, although there have been some gaps along the way.
  • It’s huge! It is Cymru’s largest cultural event and Europe’s largest touring festival. 2024’s edition attracted 186,000 visitors.
  • It’s changing (slowly…)! It used have a reputation for being insular and overly traditional, but has started to modernise, welcoming those who don’t speak Cymraeg.
