Bethesda

Mae Bethesda (neu ‘Pesda’ fel mae’r pobol lleol yn ei alw) yn un o’r llefydd mwya Cymraeg yn yr holl wlad – tref dosbarth gweithiol yn llawn hanes a diwylliant.

Mae Chwarel Y Penrhyn yn dal i dominyddu’r dref, ac mae wedi siapio’r cymuned mewn ffyrdd positif a negatif ers dros canrif. Roedd llechi Penrhyn yn gorchuddio toeau’r byd, o dŷ seneddol Lloegr i Efrog Newydd. Roedd amodau gweithio’r gweithwyr yn galed, a cafodd streic fawr 1900-1903 effaith ddofn ar y dref, sydd dal i atseinio dros ganrif yn ddiweddarach.

Mae Bethesda wedi cynhyrchu nifer rhyfeddol o awduron, beirdd a cherddorion. Ysgrifennodd Caradog Pritchard y nofel glasur ‘Un Nos Ola Leuad’ am y dref. Yn ystod y 1980au datblygodd y band roc Maffia Mr Huws yn un o fandiau mwya poblogaidd yr iaith Cymraeg, a’r dyddiau hyn mae’r cerddor athrylithgar Gruff Rhys yn curadu gŵyl flynyddoedd gwych Ara Deg.

Bethesda (or ‘Pesda’ as the locals call it) is one of the Cymraeg-est places in the country – a working class town dripping in history and culture.

Chwarel Y Penrhyn (The Penrhyn Quarry) still dominates the town, and has shaped the community both positively and negatively for over a century. Penrhyn slate roofed the world, from the English houses of parliament to New York. Working conditions were hard, and the great strike of 1900-1903 had a profound effect on the town, that still resonates over a century later.

Bethesda has produced a mind-boggling number of writers, bards and musicians. One of the classic modern works of Cymraeg literature, ‘Un Nos Ola Leuad’ (‘One Moonlit Evening’), was written about the town by local author Caradog Pritchard. During the 1980s the rock band Maffia Mr Huws emerged to become a Cymraeg language phenomenon, and these days genius local musician Gruff Rhys curates the awesome annual Ara Deg festival.
